In my final work I study the appearance of Finnish trademarks in former and present times. The work is a theoretical study and it doesn’t include any visual product. From this I gained new information and ideas for my everyday work as a graphic designer. The first part of my work is about the history of Finnish trademarks. It is based on the studies of Päivi Hovi and on my analysis concerning the changes to the UPM-Kymmene’s griffin-trademark’s appearance during last 100 years. The emphasis of my work is the analysis of contemporary trademarks. I have gathered the material for my analysis from issues 19/2004–1/2005 of Tavaramerkki (Trademark) magazine. The magazine is published by The National Board of Patents and Registration. My analysis is an aesthetic and denotative analysis, which handles solely the appearance of the trademarks. The illustrations consist of the trademarks that are studied in the work. As a result of the analysis it can be seen that Finnish trademarks have changed from detailed and concrete drawings to silhouette-like abstract symbols.
