The purpose for this final work was to design and manufacture a two-dimensional ceramic piece based on optical art and visual illusion. This work was an independent artistic product, having no specific client or location and was designed according to the practice and rules of Op Art. The piece was made from stoneware clay so it may be placed anywhere including the floor. The most important aspects of the design were the composition and the illusion of movement or volume, or a combination of these two. From the beginning, the colours chosen for the piece were shades of black and white. In the report the concepts of op-art and art cinematique are explained. Two artists; V. Vasarely and M.C. Escher, whose works have influenced this piece, are presented. Known optical illusions, and the rules of perspective, axonometry and optical movement are explained in the report. The other half of the report is divided into the designing and manufacturing of the piece. In the end there is an evaluation of the work process and the art piece. The report includes sketches and the results of glaze tests. The art piece – in over 300 pieces and 1,10 x 1,10 m in size - was slab rolled from stoneware clay with the help of a roller. The design was carved onto the clay sheets through a paper template and then cut into separate pieces. Biscuit fired tiles were glazed and fired to 1250c. The finished piece was then glued onto a net so it may be moved and placed easily. The result of this work was an art piece, which has an optical illusion of volume and movement. From different angles the image changes its perspective. Through all this the author gained valuable experience in the rules of optical art and the making of op-art from ceramic material.
