The subject of this final project work was acoustics, as part of the interior of a school cafeteria. The basis of the work was the assumption that school cafeterias are noisy and restless places. The author wanted to take acoustics as a visible part of the design and add value to the space through its consideration. Improving enjoyment and relaxation in a cafeteria during school lunches was also one of the aims of the final project work.To realize these aims the author became familiar with the background to acoustic theory; made questionnaires in two schools and designed an interior concept for the cafeteria in Korpilahti’s school centre. These are also the three most important aspects in the final project work. The intention of the questionnaire was to verify the assumption that school cafeterias are noisy and restless places. Through interior design the author wanted to show that acoustics can create more relaxing and enjoyable spaces in terms of appearance as well as sound. Becoming familiar with the background of acoustics, the author wanted to inform both herself and her readers about the subject and generate new ideas for the design work.As a part of the final project work the author goes through the general aims of school lunch per se and thinks over the possibilities of varying the space’s general function. The meaning here is to give depth and a new dimension to acoustic as well as interior design. |
