The issue of this final project work is to design and prepare a work of art in textile for a customers private home. The goal of the work has been to design a unique textile work that fills the hopes and expectations of the customer and interacts with the space. The work should also show the authors skills as a textile designer.
The project started in May 2004. The author based her design on three different things; the author familiarized herself with customers needs, analyzed the space and studied a few 20th centurys art movements. The house itself has functional features and besides that the author has studied cubism, futurism and constructivism.
The process of design was closely orientated. The design proceeded from a brain-storming process through to proper sketches. Three different sketches with material samples were shown to the customer. On the basis of the customers choice final sketches were made, technique and material samples prepared as well as prototypes of the textiles to fit to wall. After fitting “Cinderellas’ sky” was made and hung in the customers home in November 2004.
The textile material used is rough linen. It was made by printing the fabric, machine embroidery and printing with metal paper. The Five-piece work lightens up while 3-dimensional form simultaneously grows. The work was attached to a wire frame structure. With this work the author achieved a large fire-safe work measuring 5 x 1,75 x 0.50 m, even though this is not an issue in a private home.
The project is a successful example of interaction between a designer and a customer. The author gained valuable experience about the importance of customer confidence in the designer. Making the textile work of art also trained the authors artistic expression.
