The aim of this final project work was to plan, execute and analyze a course for doll-making with an emphasis on the idea of the positive learning experience. The author’s reasons for choosing such an approach were in response to her needs as a developing professional teacher. The course ran through Autumn 2004 at Savonlinna Senior Secondary School of Art and Music where it was included into the curriculum. The plans for the course were executed by the author with help from Kati Sinkkonen, the lecturer of pictorial arts and the class consisted of year three art students according to the author’s interests in that age range. During the course each student made their own doll using felting and needle felting techniques. The author’s multifaceted familiarization with felting techniques from her studies at The Kuopio Academy of Design and her need to train in those techniques affected her choice of activities. The hourly schedule was influenced by experimental learning techniques the author considered relevant to the positive learning experience. The students’ experiences were surveyed using memory investigation which continued after the course as she felt these were the only suitable methods to be found. The students completed an essay stating their positive and negative responses to the experience. By examining the essays the author tried to find ideas for developing her teaching technique and at the same time evaluate the achievement of the positive learning experience in students. The author feels that the aims were achieved as the course carried through to completion effectively and new teaching techniques and attitudes were discovered and developed along the way. This report will hopefully prove useful for others orientated towards the professional approach in teaching.
