In this final project work the author bound a book and made a case study of the subject matter. The book is called Graduale Aboense 1397 – 1406. Näköispainos käsikirjoituskatkelmasta, edited by Ilkka Taitto and published by the Finnish Literary Society in 2002.
In the literary summary the author describes the beginnings of literature; medieval literature; Finnish medieval culture and the church. This forms a template from where to begin with an understanding of the value of the volume and its position in literary history.
The aim of the case study was to build grounds for execution of the format of the volume. The chosen method was a pictorial analysis. The picture selected for analysis was a woodcut from another facsimile, Missale Aboense. This book is historically central to Finnish literature and the value of the picture as a medieval document is generally acknowledged. Former research had identified the characters in the picture and the knowledge of their status deepened interpretation. As a result of the analysis, a list of general features from the Finnish church’s medieval portrait was established. This was adapted for the design of the cover picture.
In addition, the author compared her decisions and choices with those that were made when planning the interior reconstruction of Saint Olavi’s Church in Tyrvää. The author made consciously different choices justifying them by the motive of making a contemporary book; one that is a facsimile instead of an original; the purpose of which was to fulfill author’s outlook.
The product is a leather bound cover with a printed picture of an angel. A leather ribbon inscribed with the hymn Gloria wraps the book. The writing is in the gothic text format.
The report includes a literary summary, pictorial analysis, sketches for the picture of the cover, reflection concerning the material and technical choices, a working dairy and an evaluation of the project.
