The objective of the thesis was to design and manufacture two works of art as a team work to a shopping mall Aapeli in Kuopio. The work was custom-built to Savocon Oy. The CEO of Savocon Oy Martti Kankkunen hoped that the design would be a dialogue with the space and action in it, and that different materials would be combined in the works of art. According to the customer’s wishes glass was combined with textile, which meant that two students from the ceramics and glass design department were with the project.
Two designs were completed. “Jään lumo” was designed and manufactured by Hanna Karjalainen. “Liikettä aikaan” was designed and manufactured by Anna-Leena Niemi. Both of these designers are studying textile printing and dyeing. Both made their own reports about the process. The glass parts were designed and manufactured by Hanna Perälä and Kirsi Puonti.
The objective was to design a work of art, which was in dialogue with both the space and with the other work of art. For this reason the designers started the creation process together. The analysis of the place was made. Analysing and creating were done together and separately. In advanced level each designer created her own ideas.
The subjects of “Jään lumo” became to be the seasons of water; ice, snow and water. Based on the final designs material samples were made out of textile and glass. Samples and three designs were presented to the client; from these the work of art to be manufactured was chosen.
The materials of the work of art were felt and cotton fabric. The technique was painting and moulding. In the samples the right colours and techniques were searched to get a relief surface. The work of art was fire protected, because of the regulations in public places. The work included three parts which were the size 2, 3 x 6, 6 all together. The fabrics were stabled to the wooden frames.
The unifying factors of the works of arts were: the relief surface, the three parts, the curved shapes, the glass parts and some colour shades. The author got experience from glass as a material and from team work with Anna-Leena Niemi, Hanna Perälä and Kirsi Puonti. |
