The goal of this final project work was to design and produce handicraft courcses for children and senior citizens. The main theme of the process was the improvement of well-being. The handicraft counselling process was approached through techniques and materials. The techniques were new to the partisipants. The main aim of this work was to observe the role of the counsellor in the teaching situation and develop professional skills as a counsellor by observing and comparing the different partisipants. The groups in the teaching situation were also part of the work.
The author investigated the interest of children and senior citizens through the use of a questionnaire. The questionnaire helped with deciding the techniques employed for the courses. The author investigated the safety of the reactive dyes and the meaning of occupational safety in the teaching situation. The author also looked into the working of the school of art during the period of working practice. The author studied at the the Kajaani School of Art as a student during her childhood and has described her own experience.
The teaching of the children was done at the Espoo School of Art. The author taught the resist dyeing technique for children. Three different groups of children were taught. The children were between 9 to 11 years old. With the senior citizens felting techniques such as needle felting and carding were used. Teaching of the senior citizens was carried out at senior home in Kuopio. The senior citizens printed patterns for woolfabric. The students designed their own work and enjoyed working together in the groups.
