The objective of the final work was to design and realise a work of art to Trade Center Aapeli. Form language, colours and architecture were the basis of the work. It was an assignement ordered by a local construction firm’s president Martti Kankkunen Savocon Ltd donated the work to Aapeli. The work of art was created in collaboration with Hanna Karjalainen, Hanna Perälä and Kirsi Puonti, students of Ceramic and Glass Design Department, also participated in the team work. The creation process was approached by using idea- and concept maps. The aim was to find a common denominator for the two works of art. The architecture of Trade Center Aapeli was chosen as the final idea. The choice was based on the concept maps, the designer’s personal interest and the agreement with the cooperating partner. The creation project was started by visiting the construction site of Trade Center Aapeli. The space of the building was analysed and relevant literature in the field of architecture was studied. Sketches based on the collected material. Two sketches were presented to the contractor. Essential ideas and sketches were combined into one Power Point presentation. The materials used were cotton- and viscose/polyester fabric, styrox and sand casted glass parts. Two common denominators with Karjalainen’s work were three-dimensionality and colour palette. The work was three-parted and measured 100 x 155cm, 85 x 155 cm and 50 x 155 cm. Those three elements were stretched around veneer frames. The work was coated with a fire resistant composite because it was placed into a public area. Experience in combining different materials as well as successful cooperation and team work combining the knowledge and skills of the students from two departments was acquired through the final work. This report is targeted to students of textile design and amateurs with basic textile handicraft skills.
