The objective of the final work was to design and produce a curtain with three-dimensional surface and aesthetic and practical look. The curtain was made on the basis of crepe experiments. Two polyester fabrics were joined together and cut patterns of transparent cotton gauze were sewn between the fabrics. Then the curtain was shrank in sodium hydroxide solution, rinsed in cold water and neutralized with vinegar acid. Different kind of curtains, crepe technique, suitable materials for crepe, work safety and fire safety were discussed in the report. The objective of the experiments was to find out how fabrics shrink, how the patternīs shape affects shrinkage and how the composition of the patterns affects falling of the fabric. The suitable colour for the curtain was found out by testing different colour combinations of transparent polyester fabrics. According to the results, the critical factors of falling were the shape of patterns and composition of patterns. The patterns need to be scattered throughout the curtain in order to achieve even falling. On the base of the experiment, one pattern was chosen to be further developed for a curtain. According to the results, a layered crepe technique can be applied to patterning a curtain. However, the variations of the technique are limited if the desired product should be an evenly falling curtain. Because of the slowness of the technique, the end product is expensive. On the other hand, a handmade curtain does not compete with industrially manufactured curtains on the market. The final work was the first stage of product development of a crepe curtain material. The fire-proof and edgefinishing of the material need to be further considered. The final work has been directed to people who are interested in crepe technique and furnishing fabrics. |
