This final project is a product development assignment. The aim of the work was to design and make test samples for a women’s scarf collection. The purpose was to find a practical technique for making the scarf. The basis of this final project work was the writer’s introduction to research course, made through practice work at the Kuopio Academy of Design in spring 2004. In this work the writer studied the woman consumer’s present use of scarves and their possible buying potential. Inquiry forms were given to women consumers and interviews were conducted with the seller of the scarves and also the scarf importers, manufacturers and retail companies. The practice work clarified that there might be a demand for the hand-made scarves.
The starting point was the consideration of forthcoming fashion, taking notice of style, importance of colours and also colour analysis, which all partly affect the writer’s designs. The designer wanted to design a hand-made scarf batch distinguishable from industrially manufactured scarves. Material concerning the history of scarves was also collected as background information. Getting into the historical aspect brought new meanings to the accessory. The designer decided through this, that the scarf is indeed an important piece of clothing.
The development of the product is relayed in the planning section. The designer test-marketed the scarves which, in part at least, gave clarity to the design work. Two scarves were used for testing from which the designer received valuable information for redevelopment purposes. The scarves are made of thin cotton cambric. The designer developed a modification of the shibor technique to add pattern to the scarves with syringe/injection emulsion. The scarves are totally hand-made. The final result was four rectangle shaped scarves for everyday wear. The packages, including information labels were also designed for the product. The making of the samples has been interesting and the designer’s professional competence has increased during the product development. In the future the designer would like to make scarves as a secondary occupation. The final project work is aimed at women who are interested in scarves, people working in the textile and clothing fields and those who need information on textile printing, colours and clothing.
