This final project is concerned with weaving a three-dimensional surface into a fabric by using a loom with two warp beams and combining wool that can be felted with another natural fibre that ordinarily cannot be felted. It was also concerned with how the woven fabric could be finished to change the look and the feel of the fabric. Developing the quality of a scarf fabric was something the author had studied previously and wished to continue.
The starting point of this work was a scarf with woven crepes and pleats of different colours. A material that can be felted and a material that cannot be felted were combined and the woven fabric was felted in a washing machine. The fabric shrunk to change its look and feel. The quality of the fabric had been developed during these studies by weaving different kinds of samples, but there was still a lot of experimental work to do.
The goal of the project work was to develop the scarf fabric so that its quality, feel and look would be better than before and that the whole product would be more complete. The goal was also to study combining different materials and how they work together. Versatile development of the quality was sought. This project work’s aim was to find the best material combination for this fabric; that is, materials that make the fabric soft, give it a nice feel and make it look neat and finished. A weave that would make the weaving of a three-dimensional surface fluent was searched for. A finishing that would make the fabric’s surface look matted without making the fabric too thick or stiff was also sought. The colours, weaves and materials that work best together were also studied.
The subject of the project work was studied by weaving samples. Different materials and weaves were used, different colour schemes were tested and felting samples were done in a washing machine. In the end a model of a scarf was woven.
The weaving did not speed up during the process, but a combination of weaves that made the weaving more fluent was found. The choices of the materials were good because the feel and the look that were sought were achieved. The fabric gained a more diverse look, especially the side that does not have the pleats became more varied because of the different colours in the warp. A scarf that was softer and more flexible than the earlier versions was developed.
