The purpose of this final project work was for the author to familiarize herself with the phenomenon of the ‘artist’s book’ as an object and clarify the reasons behind the development of the medium as we see it today. The main focus of the work was to analyze the actual art contained in her own work as completed during Creative Production Orientation studies in the spring and autumn of 2004 and winter 2005.
The review begins with the birth of the medium and reviews the trends that have shaped its history, illustrated with pictures taken from the early days to the present time.
During the art analysis the author uses information taken from art research to help with an understanding of the form; focusing on how the analysis progresses and how it may be used to aid the understanding of the artists own work. Analysis covering art works in an exhibition called Äiti Mulla on Puperi, focuses on describing the works, the stories and the symbols and meanings behind them.
The result presents the author’s own thoughts on the meanings of the art works and of the books themselves and compares her own work to those chosen for study, ending with the effects of the project upon her own work. These effects can also be seen in the author’s worldview and professional identity at the conclusion of the work.
This final work is directed to those who are interested in art and artist’s books and may also serve as an inspiration for those who are analyzing art.
