The subject brief of this final project work was to design and produce a carpet to be used as a purchase order model at Kuopion Taitokeskus. The idea arose during the author’s practical training at Kuopion Taitokeskus in 2004. The basis of this work was “ The Development of Model Services for Kuopio Crafts and Arts Association”; a final project work from the year 2001, by current advisor of Taitokeskus, Pirjo Hyvärinen. In her work, Hyvärinen describes the situation of model services at that time. Hyvärinen found that the situation was complex and that a complete model collection was needed. The final project work of Hyvärinen represents a standard of activity for designing a model collection for Taitokeskus. The author has done her work in accordance with the standard of activity represented in Hyvärinen’s work.
Kuopion Taitokeskus and their customers, who will use models to make choices, inform the background to this work. In the report, the customer is defined based on the purchase order experience of the Taitokeskus advisor. Interior decoration colour trends of today and of the future were considered during the design process.
The realisation of the carpet model was carried out by weaving with looms. The aim of this was to come up with new and interesting surfaces. As the interesting weaves were found, a number of experiments were made with different combinations of materials. Based on these experiments, the final model and material combinations were selected. Following this, colour choices were made and a set of colour samples weaved. The full-sized model carpet was also weaved to see how selected weave types behave on larger surfaces.
In addition to producing model samples, the author also designed the portfolio for a set of colour samples. The report also includes a sketch of the display cabinet for the colour samples and for those already existing at Taitokeskus.
The background and basis for this work is represented in the final project work report. Progress of the process is represented chronologically and the process is illustrated with photographs. Full particulars and pictures of model samples and warps are described. More picture material can be found on the CD presented with the report.
