The purpose of this final project work has been to develop the contents of root work courses, that they may be more versatile and better suited to today´s demands. The author has also desired to add her knowledge in this fiel in oder to plan and carry out courses for different kinds of groups. When developing the root work courses the Checklands soft systems methodology has been applied. Firstly the author looks into the background of root work today. Background information showed that there are only a few people left using root work techniques and that the traditional root braiding approach seems to be too time-consuming for modern times. Additionally, new models were sought. The contents of the root work courses needed to be versatile and the problem was solved by introducing other weaving techniques in place of the traditional one. The author has studied the structures of these techniques and the kind of material needed. Material and weaving experiments and examples for the courses were also made; totalling six in all. In addition the working processes and ready objects have been evaluated. Following the actual experiments and model samples, the author noted the influences that go towards the planning and execution of courses. Much thought went into the different weaving techniques applicable to courses as well as the moulds and tools. Working with natural materials gives many posibilities for working with a wide variety of groups. The author also found that using unpeeled root makes the work faster.
