The objective of this final project work was to research the process of having disabled people designing and making textiles, using the silk scarf as a model by which to judge skill and apprenticeship outcomes. Independence for the disabled person was also of importance, concerning such issues as quality and working support, that they may have a chance to work professionally. The process was carried out in “Puustellin työkylä” in Laukaa in 2004 with Mervi, the person the author had instructed during her working life between 2001 and 2004. The theoretical instruction was given by the special trade school of Kuhankoski according to the handcrafts teaching program. The education program was organized by the apprenticeship centre in Jyväskylä. The disabled person designed the sketched ideas for the silk scarf with the support of the teacher and made the work with instructions from these sketches with the support of the author. The scarf itself was woven in the working place. The process and the final silk scarf itself were analyzed and appraised by the student, the teacher and the author at the trade school. The final project work was carried out as a case study by the method of qualitative research. Observation was used as the method of material gathering. The author made an attempt to be in contact with the disabled person and to observe her working only when it was necessary, so that the process would continue successfully. The study shows that disabled people are able to carry out this sort of work when the instructions and guidelines are in place. The disabled person does, however need support for the written documentation and for supervision purposes. The final project work is meant for those interested in disability and education in terms of apprenticeship and supervision. The reader of the study is assumed to have a basic knowledge of weaving.
