The purpose of this final work was to improve clothes for premature infants; paying particular attention to the special needs of the premature child. The clothes are easy to put on and are washable in 60ºC. We also payed close attention to the nurses point of view. The aim was to produce easily comprehendable instructions for making, so that the clothes could be made by anyone. We will also try to get the patterns published in Suuri Käsityölehti, because we would like to challenge everyone to make clothes for premature infants and give them to the nearest hospital. The patterns are also usable for dolls.
The first idea for this product came when Sari´s daughter Janika was born. Janika weighed 1760g. Sari noticed that clothes were quite difficult to find. Clothes in the hospital were handmade by nurses or donated. Sari got the idea that she could use her professional skills for developing these tiny little clothes.
This final project work was made by two people; Sari Mikander and Henna Pisto, who have worked as a partnership with designing, producing and reporting.
This work was done in cooperation with KYS´s intensive care unit for newborns, 2406 and Suuri Käsityölehti. We have attained important information from the hospital for things that should be taken into account in designing and producing clothes for premature infants. Journalist Ritva Törmä has given us the information for the publishing of instructions and patterns.
As a result of this work we have designed the following articles; wraparound body, pants, sleeping bag, bag-shirt, c-pap –hat. First we produced prototypes, which helped us to accomplish the final products. Ready patterns and instructions are being offered to Suuri Käsityölehti for possible publishing.
