The topic for this final project with thesis was a product design
project for Leonardo, an internationally successful glass and giftware brand,
owned by the German design company Glaskoch B. Koch jr. GmbH + Co. KG. The
goal of the project was to design a product family that would fit into the
style and production methods used in the Leonardo collection and would have
the potential to reach mass production.
Research into Leonardo’s business profile as well as an analysis of product availability
and features of the product collection were the basis of the design process.
The goal of the product analysis was to determine the main product characteristics
of the brand and interpret them through the eyes of a designer. Based on the
results of the analysis, the style of the current Leonardo collection comprises
of experimental forms, trendy surface structures, vibrant colour schemes and
open approach to the characteristics of glass. The results of the analysis are
based on a study of bowls, serving dishes, vases and candlesticks from the Leonardo
collection.
The design brief defining the appearance, function, production methods and user
group for the design product family using Leonardo’s business profile resulted
from the product analysis as well as the designer’s own interpretation. Through
interpreting the company’s phrase ‘Inspiration for modern living in quality and
emotion!’, the design brief situates the product family to be part of a youthful,
modern consumer’s home.
The report portrays the stages of the design process of the new product family
followed in co-operation with the company. The process is portrayed starting
from the designer’s initial product ideas continuing to the options chosen by
the company and through further development to the final product samples produced
by the company.
The results of the work are hand-made prototypes made by the designer as well
as product samples produced at Leonardo factory. These product samples may proceed
to industrial production and may possibly be added to the Leonardo collection
for the spring of 2008.
