THE KUOPIO ACADEMY OF DESIGN (TAITEMIA) LIBRARY Library and information services The Academy Library acquires, builds up and maintains collections on the subject of design. It also provides information services connected with design and maintains communication links. A public library, it is part of the network of Finnish scientific libraries and its collections and services are thus open to anyone needing information on design. The Academy Library is the strongest provider of professional design information in the region. It bears high-level responsibility for the needs of teaching and study, research and development at the Academy and is a source of added value for working, business and cultural life. The Library also has collections and reference works in the Materials Library and Academy departments. It purchases quality Finnish and foreign scientific and professional publications on design in both conventional and digital format. Its services are also available online. The library premises, equipment, software and services permit both individual and group work. One reason for establishing the Materials Library was that the various Academy departments are constantly producing samples of materials, techniques and structures along with information on materials research, ongoing developments and their application. The Materials Library covers textiles and clothing, ceramics and product design. In addition to operating its collections and library services, the Library lends out tools and small equipment (such as cameras, video cameras and laptops) for use by students in the various Academy departments, maintains data retrieval links and registers of theses, organises the Academy’s publishing and the running of the Materials Library (textiles and clothing materials, ceramics and glass, product design) and maintains the Digitemia image library and a design glossary. The Library also sells publications in the Academy’s Taitemia series, stationery and copier cards. The Digitemia image library is a digital materials management and archiving system maintained by the Academy Library. The images at present stored in it will in the future be supplemented by other digital material. The collections in the Academy Library are available to students and teachers at the Academy and anyone else in need of information about design. The Library is open Monday–Thursday 9–20, Friday 9–15. The Materials Library in Turo is open on Wednesdays 8-10:30 Kuopio Academy of Design Ms Heli Muhonen Ms Emma Ruotsalainen
