The objective of this final project work is to examine construction work by means of architecture. The final project work includes four hand built ceramic elements, sculptures, in which slab technique has been exploited. The written presentation examines construction with concepts of architecture. Moreover, it includes a short introduction to the subject starting from the structures of the universe and ending in human cells. In the building of the ceramic elements, a wooden mould has been used. The mould has been made by the writer. The 592-clay, which has been used as a material, has first been rolled into slabs. Then plates cut out of the slabs, have been placed inside the mould to form the wall structures of each element. All the elements are hollow. After the first firing (950 C), the elements have been fired in a high temperature (1250 C). They have been coated with patina which includes barium carbonate, nepheline syenite and copper oxide. The patina coating has been spread on the elements with a sponge after the first firing. The final project work includes four hand built elements which can form a square. This formation of vertical plane elements is an architectural study of construction, formation and living. The aim has been to produce a series of elements which can be joined to form a room, but which can also be used as walls. This final project work is an extended version of previous construction studies by the writer. It is a connecting element between the hand building and ceramic sculpture courses. The work has increased the writer's problem solving skills in the construction of large objects, especially in the area of strength of materials. -S.D.G.-
