The aim of this project work has been to design a set of art textile paintings and to realize one of them as a priced product. Furthermore, the aim has been to find a technique that stands out from the commonly used techniques and differs from the traditional look of especially hand weaved products. The art textile painting made should be comparable, for example, to oil paintings. In the present work, flowers and especially the history of roses and the different uses of roses in the course of time are discussed. The author’s relationship with flowers carries the whole work forward. The quietly spoken messages of flowers and mental images they create play an important part in the designing process. The starting points of sketching have been books, photographs and the surrounding nature. Sketches from the whole process are included in the work. In these sketches the development from the first idea to a framed painting can be seen. As a result sketches ‘jotain uutta, jotain vanhaa’ and the realized ‘kolme elämää’ are introduced. Technique is studied by combining hand weaving and printing techniques. Ikat-technique carried out by painting was discovered to be the strongest among the samples. A more detailed study of weaving and printing techniques is not included in the work. The work has been addressed to persons who have basic knowledge of hand weaving and printing. The work is not meant to be an instruction. A small research about where art textile paintings could meet the consumers is included in the work. Possible places considered include galleries or small boutiques, but the strongest choice seems to be art rental agencies. In an art rental agency consumer pays a monthly rent that forms in the end the whole selling price of the art work. The price for the painting made is calculated and an attempt is made to reach a competitive and realistic result. The basis of price setting has been the actual costs of the process.
