The starting point for the final project work was the product deep blue screen designed and made by a German company called Wunschdesign. Deep blue screen is a set of blue illuminated tubes functioning as a light fixture and as a space divider. Deep blue screen consists of five 220 cm high cylinder shaped tubes made of blue fabric. The aim of the work was to develop this product further into a new product. The aim was to create a new look for the tubes with the help of material and patterns and to make an interesting, functional and beautiful interior decoration product. The making process was carried out in the workshop of Wunschdesign in Germany.
The pattern design and the material tests were important in the work. The patterns were firstly drawn by hand and then manipulated by Photoshop 5.5 -program. Paper models were also used for helping the design. In the work the suitable materials for the illuminated tubes were cleared up. Furthermore, it has been clarified how suitable devoré technique is for the light fixtures and especially for the illuminated tubes. The right material and the way of printing were found out by the tests. The tested fabrics were analysed and test tubes of the best alternatives were made in a real size to see how the light appears in the tubes.
The work resulted in the making of a set of white oval shaped tubes with devoré printed patterns which gave the product a new interesting look. The theme of the patterns was tribal tattoos, according to the wishes by Wunschdesign. The size and the shape of the tubes were also changed from the original. Inside of the tubes there are halogen lamps and the brightness of the lamps can be adjusted according to the use. The halogen lamps are easy to change and different colours of the lamps are available, so the user can choose the agreeable colour.
In the work the fire safety of the textiles is discussed. The way of realizing the fire protection for the tubes in case they are marketed into public places in the future has also been considered. Furthermore, the writer has made a short survey of interior magazines which include some textile lamps existing on the market. Along this work the writer has figured out her possibilities to co-operate with a small German company working in the area of interior design.
