The aim of this final project work was to custom make a pair of men’s felt lining winter shoes using currently available machines. The shoes should be warm, look good and fulfill the customer’s expectations. Two different methods to sew the cover of the men’s winter felt lining shoes with a surface sewing machine were studied. First a sewing machine with a special kind of presser foot was used and secondly a shoemaker’s sewing machine also called a cylinder machine. The soles and the heels of the shoes were hand made with traditional methods. This work consists of two pairs of men’s felt lining winter shoes made for one customer. The first pair is made of felt lining and felt cover which is leather-covered with sewing. The sole is made by using a similar method as in a normal inside sewed welt shoe. The second pair is made of thick single felt and a leather-cover. The insole is made by using a felt layer extending to the edge. The sole is made by using a method of shoemaker’s waxed thread seam, which means that the trimming ribbon is sewed totally on to the outer edge of the shoe.The making process of the shoes is presented as a scheme and also in pictures with texts explaining the different stages of the work. A clear order of the different stages of the work is presented. Furthermore, the best way of managing each step of the work to get the best result is explained. Also mistakes made during this work are analyzed and further improvements are proposed.Both pairs of shoes fit the customer’s feet and are equally warm. The customer found the second pair more good-looking.
