The aim of the present final project work has been to plan
and carry out a course in art and creative work for disabled children at
the age of 10 to 13 years living in the capital region. The course was
carried out in co-operation with the association 'Vammaisten luova
toiminta' operating in Helsinki. The association was also the
executive partner of this final project work. The aim of the author was to
plan a comprehensive and interesting course plan for the chosen target
group and to carry it out in spring 2001 in the Art Centre 'Annantalo' for Children and Youth in Helsinki.
In the final project work the suitability of chosen techniques and methods
of creative work for the target group has been researched and a proposal
for improvement have been stated on the basis of the research to develop
the techniques to be even more suitable. The chosen forms of creative work
which have been discussed in this work are music, playing, painting, making
collage, felting and modelling. The author got acquainted with the
characteristics of the target group by taking a closer look at training
education which most of the children of this group take part in.
The final project work was carried out as a qualitative research by using
participatory observation as the method for gathering information. The
author has taken part in the children's action and has tried to form
a close relationship to them. The planned exercises were very suitable for
the target group but the suitability of the chosen techniques seemed to
vary according to individual differences. Because of the heterogeneous
character of the group no specific generalizations can be made. The fact
that observations have been made from various viewpoints adds to the
reliability of the research.
The course was carried out successfully and the association decided to
continue the work. With the help of the course the operational field of the
association expanded to include a new target group, disabled children.
The target group of the present final project work is persons interested in
special groups and instructing. |
