The purpose of this final work was to produce a hand woven christening robe to be used in the author’s own family. The task of the work was to design a unique product that meets the wishes of the family. The emphasis of the final work was in designing and weaving the fabric of the christening robe. The white christening robe includes symbolism that brings out the whole content of baptism. One purpose of the final work was to clarify the deeper significance of a christening robe. That’s why the final work was begun by studying baptism, the sacrament of Lutheran church, and its purpose. This study led to the discovery of the history and meaning of the white christening robe. The history of the christening robe, the way it has changed through the years, was clarified in the final project work. The christening robes of today were studied by reviewing the christening robes on sale in the department stores and children’s boutiques in Kuopio. Also different kinds of directions for making christening robes were assembled from handicraft magazines. The history as well as the present of christening robes gave background knowledge to support the designing of the unique dress. Family’s wishes of the christening robe and its fabric were the starting point of designing. Instead of a frilly look the aim was to create something more simplified. The wishes concerning the fabric’s qualities included that it should be subtle, lightweight and festive. The fabric and the model of the dress were to match and create a whole. The starting point of designing the fabric was planning the weave. The chosen weave consisted of a plain weave with warp floats. The weave was worked with a computer weaving program in order to design different patterns. The purpose of the weaving experiments was to find out the different qualities of the fabric, both the tactile qualities and the sight. Linen was chosen to be the material of the fabric as it is considered to be festive and dignified. Different fabric samples were woven out of which the final model of the fabric was chosen. In making the christening robe the author of the final project work co-operated with the Fashion Team company were the sewing work was made. A festive result was achieved in the christening robe. In the fabric it was accomplished to crate subtle and beautiful qualities which match the simplified look of the christening robe.
