The aims for the present final project work was to learn the basics of industrial and consumer related design and to research the author's role as a freelance-designer. The work was made in co-operation with Intrade Partners Ltd. On the background of the design process is the observation and analysing process of the standard operational mode of Intrade Partners Ltd. as well as of external operation field and products of Prisma-hypermarkets and their competitors. In this final project work the kind of interior design fabrics on the market as well as aspects having an influence on the commercial design process are studied from the designer's perspective. The goal was to design commercial, aesthetic and versatile printed products for Finnish homes. In this work the author has discussed international and national trends for spring 2002 as well as textile markets, on the basis of interior design magazines, in order to make the designs competitive on the market. In the designing process the author has observed visions of the consumers as well as commercial principles which influence industrial textile designing. In designing the author has used the required printing and manufacturing techniques as well as computer-aided design. The main theme was to design patterns and products which are compatible with Prisma-hypermarkets' basic product collection and customers. The author designed thirteen pattern designs for the textile collection of Prisma-hypermarkets for spring 2002. Two of the designs were chosen in to the collection and will be on the market in January 2002. The second factor which has influenced this final project work is the author's role as a freelance-designer. The author observes the different possibilities and standard practices which influence the work as a freelancer and explains how a freelancer can start entrepreneurial activity, what kind of contracts designers use and which are the basic copyrights. This final project work is the author's process to get to know the role of a freelance designer. This final project work is aimed at textile students and people who know the basics of industrial textile design.
