The subject matter of this final project work was to design and print a series of wall textiles for the lobby of the pediatric policlinic of the Kuopio University Hospital. The four-piece work is called ”Seafarers” and it was made by using various techniques of printing and dyeing. The wall textiles were commisioned by the planning team of the the pediatric policlinic of the Kuopio University Hospital and financed by the supporting association ”The godparents of Pediatric Policlinic of Kuopio”. Designing and making this work of art was apart of the so called ”Palava Project”, which included, among other things, the removal of the pediatric services from the Alava children’ s hospital to the newly built pediatric wing of the Puijo Hospital of Kuopio University Hospital. The aim of this final project work was to develop the author’s professional skills and to meet the strict demands of designing for a public interior as well as to satisfy the wishes of the commissioner in designing this work of art. The final paper describes the designing process as a whole. This includes specifying the designing project together with the commissioner, finding out about the fireproofness regulations concerning textiles in hospitals, making sketches, carrying out experiments in printing techniques and materials, printing the actual work of art, and, finally, evaluating the work of art in its surroundings. This final paper also describes cooperation with the commissioners and the feedback which the sketches, experiments and the wall twxtiles recieved. The final paper also describes the interior for which the textiles were designed and the effect of the interior on the designing process. Some research was made on how to design for the target group, children. The final paper also descibes the Palava project in general and the share of the Kuopio Academy of design in it. In the last section of the final paper quoestions concerning pricing have been considered. Still, the emphasis of this final work is in the description of the author’s personal designing process and developing printing techniques.
