The purpose of this final project work has been to design and make a
wedding rug for the crypt of Oulu Cathedral by using rya rug technique. The
final project work is a subjective presentation of the process from the
author’ s point of view. By observing herself as an interpreter and
maker the author has aimed at perceiving her identity as a professional,
finding out her professional weaknesses and strengths and testing her
skills in running a business of her own. The emphasis of the final project
work is laid on the design process and on the self-reflective way of
approaching the project.
The rya rug was ordered by the parish of Oulu Cathedral and the actual
representatives of the parish were the dean and the parish council. Also
the architect responsible for the overall look of the crypt gave his
opinion during the process. Meetings with the customer played an essential
role in the process creating important situations for the professional
growth of the author. On the basis of the written estimation of the
architect and the parish council the author has then considered how she
managed to reach her aims at the end.
The task was to create a unique rug fitting in to the atmosphere of the
crypt. The rug would also have to meet the demands set for a church
textile. The product would have to carry a deep meaning, a message for the
viewer and it would also have to reveal the technical skills of the author
as a professional. The dim light and the rough three-dimensional stone
floor of the crypt were a great challenge when it came to the design
process. In addition to being a unique work of textile art the rug would
have to be usable. The contents, aesthetics and usability would have to be
in balance.
In order to support the design process the author has studied the
history of the rya rug in church. The review to rya rugs in church presents
17 wedding rugs photographed by the author in different churches in
Finland. The starting points of the final project work include getting
acquainted with author-oriented way of working, dealing with the
author’ s Christian comprehension of human being, clarifying the role
of a textile in a church and studying the technique of rya rug. In
addition, the wishes of the customer and the spatial analyse of the crypt
were important factors of the design process.
The design process has been aimed at meeting the demands of the customer
and coping with the challenges set by the space, still paying attention to
the artist’ s vision and expression. The final project work presents
35 coloured designs, analyzed by the author on the basis of Christian
symbolism. From these designs the customer picked out the one to be
realized as a rya rug. Experimentation and quality development have been
used to improve the aesthetics and usability of the textile, keeping an eye
on its future use on the floor. Making the rya rug was an important
learning process for the author.
The wedding rug resulting from the final project work has been delivered
to the customer. It is placed in the crypt of the Oulu Cathedral, in front
of the altar. The process has taught the author as a designer and weaver.
The author has gained a realistic view of a custom-oriented project –
from getting an order from a customer to the point of delivering the final
product. During the process the author found her strengths as a
professional as well as the areas to improve. The knowledge acquired during
the process is a valuable tool for the author when orienting towards
professional life.
The final project work is addressed to those who are interested in rya
rugs, church textiles and Christian symbolism. |
