The Crafts Center Pumpuliina is one of the crafts centers of the Registered
Crafts and Design Association of Upper Savo. It is located in the
municipality of Pielavesi. The Crafts Center was founded in 1974 at the
same time as an extensive network of crafts centers was founded in Finland. The Crafts Center Pumpuliina has been the pilot crafts center of
the year 2001 in the region of Upper Savo. When being a pilot crafts
center, the activity of Pumpuliina has been observed, above all, from the
viewpoint of developing services in our municipality.
The main emphasis of the instruction services of the Crafts Center is on
weaving. In addition, short courses, special subject days and basic art
education for children and teenagers in crafts as well as courses sold
outside as expert services, for example, to open colleges and to different
kinds of associations are important activity forms. In the Crafts Center
there is a gift shop through which crafts entrepreneurs are offered the
possibility to market their products.
The aim of the present study is to provide clues about the direction into
which the instruction services of the Crafts Center Pumpuliina should be
developed. In recent years the number of instructional workshop days has
reduced both nationally and in the Crafts Center. It is, however, worth
noticing that the activity has expanded comprising expert services,
teaching and course activities. Some crafts and design associations have
changed their activity radically by cutting down instruction services and
directing their activity towards crafts and design shops and projects. On
the basis of the survey and different kinds of experiments an attempt is
made to provide an operational model with the help of which it would be
possible to continue employing two trained people.
The study shows that people in the municipal organs as well as people
interested in crafts would like to keep the activity going. On the basis of
the survey and different kinds of experiments the author has reached the
conclusion that the activity of the Crafts Center Pumpuliina has to be
considered more widely from the viewpoint of the municipality, how crafts
skills will be maintained and how the needs of people interested in them
will be met in a municipality like Pielavesi where there are 6,000
inhabitants. More cooperation is needed and clear, financially profitable
forms of activity must be searched for. Continuation of the activity with
the current number of employees requires cooperation between the open
college and Pumpuliina concerning selection of courses and more efficient
use of the weaving workshop as well as contribution to the activity of the
shop and the visibility of the whole activity. Operational profitability
has to be the starting point of all kinds of development. |
