In the final project work Pietism, history of wedding rya rugs and history of the Christian Instieute of Portaanpää have been studied and this information has been used as starting point of designing. The goal of this work has been to design a pietistical wedding rya rug into the auditorium of the Christian Institute of Portaanpää in Lapinlahti on basis of these facts. The clients´hopes and opinions have been taken into cosideration. Moreover, the goal has been to learn all about the designing and producing techniques of rya rug. Those techniques were new for the author. In the final project work, for example, different ways of weaving rya rug with help of a draft have been discussed. The author has been living from her childhood in the spirit of Pietism and that´s because this subject wasn´t hard to seize on. After studying Pietism in Lapinlahti the author noticed that the main principle of Pietism was hope and consolation. The author familiarized herself with the auditorium of the Christian Institute Of Portaanpää, she got information how the auditorium is used and what kind of activities take place in Portaanpää nowadays. The author found out that besides education Portaanpää has catering service and it is used as a summer hotel. Based on this information the author designed rya rug designs and the clients chose two designs to be developed further. On basis of those designs the author wove samples, in which she learned the tufting technique of rya rug and searched convenient tuft density. Based on these woven samples the clients chose the design named "Telppäsniitty" to be carried out as a wedding rya rug. During the process the author learned to know better the history of Pietism in her native region. With the rya rug designing process she learned to depict the surface and softness of rya rugs. She also learned the weaving technique of rya rugs. The author got interested in Píetism and how it has influenced textiles. She also got intersted in rya rug weaving and plans to weave rya rugs in future.
