In the final project work the participation of disabled person in designing and making woven textiles has been researched. The aim of the final project work was by means of the textiles made by disabled persons to point out their skills and knowhow in textile design and making. The aim of the work was also to clarify how independently disabled persons are able to work with the help of written instructions. Furthermore, the purpose was to give disabled persons a chance to show their skills in textile design and with the new experience add variety and joy to working.
The designing and making of the textiles was carried out in ´Puustellin työkylä`, celebtating its' 20th anniversary year 2002. Six of the työkylä´s long- time disabled workers who have skills in weaving took part in the study.
The author supervised textile design to the disbled persons. The author specified the sketches made by disabled persons and wrote out work instructions of them. The disabled persons made the textiles by weaving with the help of work instructions and the author's supervising. The finished textiles are part of Puustellin työkylä´s exhibition in August 2002 in the main library of Laukaa.
The final project work was carried out as a qualitative research. Observation was used as the method for material gathering. The author made an attempt to be in contact with the disabled persons as much as possible and to observe their working as well as make notes throughout the whole process.
The study shows that textile design was an important and rewarding experience to the disabled persons. Their sketches can be used in textiles design. The disabled persons need in addition to the work instructions also the presence of a supervisor.
This final project work is meant for persons interested in disability and supervising of disabled persons. The reader of the study is assumed to have basic information of weaving.
