The purpose of this final project work was to develop three-dimensional surface to a sheer curtain fabric with machine embroidery. The aim was to create a three-dimensional surface by working up the material. From the results of the development work the best embroidery experiment and material was selected on basis of which a curtain was designed and made. The research problem was to determine the right material and embroidery technique.
In the final project work two translucent fabrics, organdie and voile as well as two machine embroidery techniques, pleated and twin needle technique, were used. The work proceeded guided by the experiments of which one was chosen and on basis of which a curtain was designed and made.
Factors having an influence on three-dimensionality in embroidery were studied in the final project work. When embroidery is made diagonally to thread grain, a three-dimensional surface is accomplished. Furthermore, the amount of embroidery used influences three-dimensionality. On basis of the experiments the best material was organdie, because it is less flowing than voile. Both embroidery techniques were suitable to achieve the desired three-dimensional surface. The curtain was made by twin needle technique and the chosen material was organdie. In the future the usability of the fabric and the curtain has to be developed, because this final project work was only the first stage of product development.
The final project work has been directed to people who are interested in embroidery and furnishing fabrics.
