The aim of this work was to design and make an ecological, handwoven woollen carpet which life cycle would cause as little environmental damage as possible. In addition to the ecological criteria the purpose was to design a woollen carpet which also would fulfill ethical and esthetical criteria as well as in which usability and factors connected to production could be taken into account. The final project work has been done according to the author’s own professional interests.
Background information of this work as well as central concepts connected to designing an ecological woollen carpet are clarified in the beginning of the report. After that the basis and criteria for designing a woollen carpet as well as the design and producing process of the prototype carpet are introduced in the report. Furthermore, the realization of the criteria in the prototype is estimated and it is also discussed how the marketing of the carpet should be arranged and what kind of producing possibilities it has.
The author’s own observations about eco-consumers buying behaviour done by the author in client service in a shop specializing in marketing organic and ecological products was the starting point for this work. The purpose of the carpet as a living room detail and interior decoration element as well as the target group’s that is the eco-consumers product criteria was the basis for the design process of the carpet. The stylistic starting point for designing the woollen carpet was Savotar-theme, in which particularly the nostalgic and historic values of Finnish rural landscape was emphasized.
The work is a strongly material based design process. The process started in summer and autumn 2001 by supplying dying materials and dyeing the yarns for the woollen carpet because the aim was also to make a carpet which can be critically evaluated also material-wise. After the plantdying process and after clarifying the process criteria, the process continued by making carpet designs and weaving samples. After experiments, a patterned weaved wool carpet, sized 76 cm x 169 cm was made.
In the evaluation of the carpet’s environmental effects, Savotar-wool carpet turned out to be a product, which sustains critical ecological evaluation. Furthermore, complex esthetical, ethical and usability criteria were taken into account in producing the carpet. From the Finnish ecolinen and plantdyied and natural Finnish lambs woolyarns handwoved wool carpet was important part of this work. It revealed some checkpoints, which could have not been noticed without making the protocarpet. The author was received more view and knowledge about ecological wool carpet`s producing process and production possibilities.
