In the final project work the author familiarizes herself with the textile tradition of Finnish Evangelical-Lutheran church. Furthermore, the facts that have an effect on the preservation of ecclesiastical textiles are discussed. This is accomplished by carrying out a research in example parishes and by studying literature in the field of textile conservation . Co-operation was done with the South-Carelian parishes of Parikkala, Rautjärvi and Saari. The aim has been to collect information about the matters to be taken into account when handling and storing objects and especially textiles, and to get written material about the subject. An effort is also made to arouse the parishes to take good care of their worthy cultural heritage and when dealing with new acquisitions to demand functional and easy-care products from the textile manufacturers.
In their daily work the employees of the parishes operate with valuable objects. By interviewing the vergers it’s possible to get acquainted with their versatile work description, which includes a wide variety of different tasks. The recommendations for textile storage conditions and treatment given by scientists and conservators often do not reach the people working with textiles.
In the beginning of the work the author will get acquainted with the history and church buildings of the cooperating parishes as well as their textile collections. When planning a store for ecclesiastical objects to a building that already exists, the architecture and the spirit of the sacred space should be taken into account.
Many things have an effect on the storage of textiles. The conditions of the textile store must be correct; keeping the temperature and the air humidity in the storage as steady as possible, tidiness and protection from light improve the endurance of textiles. Items’ storage places and transports from one place to another have to be planned out carefully so that mechanical damage can be avoided. The cleanness of the textiles and right conditions are the best protection against textile pests and mould. Textiles of good quality and their proper treatment and hanging methods secure the long service life of the item whereupon money is saved. The state of the textiles is evaluated in a situation when the possibility of conservation is considered. Damaged textiles must be handled with extreme care.
Washing and stain removal from valuable textiles must be left to a specialist. Minor treatments, like airing and brushing of textiles can be done for example in the vestry of the church when needed. The repair or renewing of the ecclesiastical textiles must be pondered case-specifically.
Parishioners’ opinions about the necessity, aesthetics and preservation of the ecclesiastical textiles are being studied in the end of the final project work. Furthermore, their attitudes towards acquiring new textiles have been charted. The congregation members’ taste for Christian symbolism is studied with the help of an enquiry.
As a result of this project is a written report, of which copies are presented to the collaborating parishes. Matters concerning the history of the parishes mentioned above, the architecture of the churches, museology, conservation and the acquisition of textiles are clarified in the report. Also solutions for different textile related problems are compared between the co-operation parishes. |
