  COVER STORIES - Hand embroidered towel coverings by decades

This final project work is a study of Finnish hand embroidery. The research material consists of towel coverings from the beginning of the 20th century to 1950 and is analysed decade. All the towel coverings used in this research have been copied using the same materials, designs and embroidery techniques as in the orginaltextiles. A sample of hundred towel coverings has been used in the study. The final project work examines the effect of social conditions on the occurrence of these textiles during decades by studying who have made the towel coverings and how and where they have been used. Cover Stories presents glances on the history of towel coverings as well as the events and matters covered up in the Finnish history during each decade. Design drawings of the orginal textiles are included in the attachment file of this work. Copies of towel coverings have been photographed and attached to the report. Embroidery instructions have been made of the stitches and techniques used in the towel coverings and included in the attachment file. This final project work is a comprehensive review of early 20th century towel coverings of which there is no former research. The copies made for this work are intended to tour exhibitions. The aim of this studyis to inspire young people to become acquainted with the disappearing tradition of hand embroidery.
