The aim of this final project work was to solve the suitability of experiental design as the starting point of author’s creative work. The author was also interested in the origin of mental images and their development into the final product.
Author went through an experiental design process which started from an experience which was intentionally sought from classical music and the mental images deriving from it. Author observed the experience and the images with both words and pictures. As mental imeges had been simplified to the final form started the active part of the process during which the product got its final form through experiments. The result of the process was a three-dimensional textile work of art.
After the process the author estimated it by comparing it with her previous experiental process, her creative work in general and with theories about creative work in craft. Author found out that the method is demanding but rich and inspiring. She does not however think that she will use it as routinely in the future any more but believes she is able to pick out only those parts needed for the relevant work. During the process author also recognized matters that are distinctive for her way of working e.g. the problems in sketching and relation between words and pictures in the observation of mental images.
During the process author had two kind of mental images: the mental pictures that arose from the classical music and the product-related images which occured within the process. The mental pictures were simplified to the main idea of the work and the strong image of the product was flexible enough as the work of art was forming through experiments.
