How to implement weaving techinuques to produce a heraldic flag

This dibloma work is divided into three main sections, review or theory-, development of douple sided binding and partical section. In the theoretical review is presented main issues concerning flags, heraldry, jacquard weaving and digital image theory. These issues are considered to be essential in the process of weaving a heraldic flag. In the practical part this knowledge is applied to solve a totally new double sided binding. During the development process, each binding was tested by weaving a piece of fabric with conventional computer aided loom. Tests were also carried out by weaving a special test figure with a Bonas jacquard machine at Tampere technical university. This test figure was specially designed to include predefined shapes to produce as much information as possible in respect of even color surface, color coverage and the accuracy of figure imitation in jacquard weaving. These test were made with 2-,3- and 4-color fabrics so that all colors were established on the same weaving line. All fabrics were double sided. As a final test a 2-color heraldic flag was weavwd. This flag was converted from a registered blazon. The results were evaluated based on quality factors such as: a flag must be double sided, nature of fabric surface, color coverage, accuracy of the image and fluttering fatures. Research issues were proposed to further develop the manufacturing process and the bindings so that the flag would fulfill the required quality factors even better.
