Abstract The present final project work deals with the willow braiding course which the author held in spring 2001 in the Kallio Civic Institute in Helsinki. The main goal in this work is to evaluate the author’s success as an instructor, find out how useful her teaching material is and to make a preliminary illustrated draft of that material on basis of the instructing experience. In this work the success of the held course is analysed through the author’s experiences and by interviewing the participants about their views on it. Demand for further education on the subject is charted as well as interest in other braiding materials. A follow up study is made for the participants of the course in Helsinki, with which the participants’ activity in using the learned skills after the course is examined. In the interview the author finds out what kind of courses are available in Helsinki area and asks about the suitability of the subject matter of the course for beginners in braiding. The held course proved out to be useful and materials used in instructing met the needs of participants. As an exception both the author and the participants felt that the ready made instruction for gathering willow used in the course was insufficient. On basis of the author’s personal experiences, illustrated instructional transparencies of making a “boat”-dish are made. Usability of these transparencies will be tested in the future. In addition, with the help of the experiences from the braiding course more detailed instructions for gathering willow will be made. In the future the author aims at using the results from this final project work in the business that she is planning to start. On the basis of the survey it is possible to develop a good set of teaching material about braided products, that is as functional and as adaptable to the instructor’s individual teaching methods as possible. The instructions have to be made from the customer’s point of view and the survey in this work gives a good starting point for that .
