The reason for this research and developing project was found, when I was working as an instructor at the weave workshop of Kuopio open college. There was a problem and lack of visual aids to show different types of weave models. In addition to improve my regular job, there has been a target to plan and develop some rug type of weave models for client service purposes, as well as developing plain and twill type of weaves to rug types by treadling chance. The leading idea in this work has been the theoretical background of weave varying by treadling. Using different sources of know how and via a developing process, I made 49 patterns of different weave models. They can now be used as visual aids when guiding the weaving. Knowledge for this work came from literature and my own notes when studying, my own knowledge and working experience, using an inquiry form, oral feedback and conversations with clients and members of the working group. The most essential results of this research and developing work are: There was really a need of these patterns from teachers as well as clients side. A pattern of weave model gives a clear picture of it's structure and how it looks like. Knowledge of the terminology and basics can be very poor among hobbyists. This will slow down the training process and it has to be adjust to the level of the client. Substitutes of terms have to be found, until client has learned all essential ones. Activity in weaving is best guided and improved by learning by doing method. Client gets motivated when feeling, that studying is necessary and near the practise. Using patterns of weaves it's easier to show basic principles of weaving and for instance, how the weave is build up by treadling. When developing plain and twill type of weaves, was some new knowledge found as well as many useful types of weaves. During this work was also kept in mind, that new weaves should be suitable for rugs too. These new models have got an acceptance from clients and members of working group. They have inspired and motivated to prove new type of weaves. Using weave patterns and instructions among hobbyists requires some extra work and showing from the instructor, so that all can get the benefit. Everyone will find variations, which suits for her or him and using these as samples, it is easy to make new applications for different purposes.
