In the final project work, knitting-patterns for upper level aged girls were designed. Instructions were drawn up to be used in the textile craft classes, which are optional at comprehensive school in the upper level. The aim was to produce knit-patterns and instructions that interest young people and which have been difficult to find in the selection available in shops.
The emphasis was in the designing of knitwear products and instructions. The author became acquainted with the textile craft curriculum which was used in the school involved in the process. The school commented on the work. The teaching methods used in the optional courses were taken into consideration as plans were made. A survey was used to determine the current fashion trends which are predominant in the way the youth dress themselves. The survey indicated that the majority of young girls dress according to the latest fashion, on which the planning is based. The products had to be simple enough for the young to make. Instead of producing a high number of samples, the tension and the way the knit is intertwined was tested by knitting. Instructions were drafted for machine knitting. The desired effect was created with familiar connections and work methods. The machine set limitations for the design. The knit models which best met the criteria were chosen by the author. The models were drafted, made and photographed for making of the instructions.
Knitting instructions, which could be used in the upper level, were made to the products. Moreover, the author studied communication, that is, how a message and matters that relate to perception were understood. Existing instructions were used for comparison. The object was to create a flawless and functional instruction which can be used in the upper level. The instructions had to be interesting and inspiring as well. The instructions are being used in the school involved. Feedback was given from the school, so finishing touches were applied.
