The aim of the study is to establish a theoretical model for designing canteen and cafeteria facilities at the Suominen Flexible Packaging Tampere factory of the J.W. Suominen Oyj. The established theory will act as a guideline for future planning, renovating, and redecorating at the factory canteen and cafeteria facilities. The new quality management system to be introduced in near future will play a vital role in the planning process. The new improved facilities have to comply with the directions given in the new system. The theory will reach for improved competitiveness, productivity, well being, and motivation through offering the work force cosy cafeteria and canteen facilities. Cosiness in the facilities is established by applying the proven psychological and physical positive influence the use of proper colours has on human beings. A survey at every level of the work force was conducted as a part of the study. The objective of the study was to collect opinions on the current facilities and service provider currently operating in the facilities. An analysis of the facilities is presented in the study.
The study is a project oriented operational research to its nature according to the principals of critical interest of knowledge. The problem stated has been systematically studied and the solution is reached stage by stage. Through careful analysis of the data a problem solving model for designing cafeteria and canteen facilities was developed. As a result the established theoretical basis shows a strong correlation between competitiveness, productivity, and well being. An attempt to improve these factors is made through careful interpretation of different schemes of the colour spectrum. The main finding of the study is that the application of the results of a professionally conducted process of choosing suitable colours in the facilities will add to the refreshing experience of the staff in such extent that the productivity does not decrease after a break but rather maintains the same level or is improved above the level before the break. The findings of the survey study support the changes that the new quality management system requires in the facilities.
The problem stated in the beginning of the study is well answered and the goal of establishing a new theoretical model enabling the company to cost effectively renovate and redecorate the factory canteen and cafeteria facilities is reached. The new interior plan is not presented as part of the study the reporting concentrates on the theoretical model established.
